CompressX is a free WordPress image optimization plugin that helps you optimize your website’s images for faster loading times.

You can use it to easily convert JPG/PNG images on your WordPress websites to WebP and AVIF formats, and compress WebP or AVIF images.

Install CompressX

  • Go to your WordPress admin dashboard.
  • Navigate to Plugins > Add New.
  • Search for “CompressX”.
  • Click Install Now and then Activate.

Bulk Processing & Auto Optimization

From the plugin settings page, you can get started by processing all existing images in your media library with a single click.

Furthermore, you can enable the ‘auto-processing’ option to automatically convert new uploads to WebP and AVIF formats and compress WebP and AVIF images.

Configure General Settings

In General Settings section, you can configure how CompressX optimizes your images:

  • Choose compatibility settings for different browsers.
  • Decide whether to remove unnecessary EXIF data from images.
  • Select between GD or Imagick libraries for image processing (consult your hosting provider if unsure).
  • Enable automatic removal of oversized WebP and AVIF files.
  • Automatically resize large images for optimal performance.

Customize Processing

Thumbnail Sizes

Some themes may generate additional thumbnail sizes. You can reprocess these thumbnails using the Bulk Processing function.

Exclude Folders

You can select folders in the Uploads folder and exclude them from being processed.

Custom Folders

In the case where images are stored outside the default “Uploads” folder, you can select the folder and process images inside them.

Cleaning Up

You can easily delete all images and associated database data generated by CompressX by inputting text Delete and clicking Go button. This will not affect your original images.

CompressX offers an overview of the optimization and an option of optimizing individual image in your WordPress media library.

View optimization information of each image which includes Original size, WebP size, AVIF size and the number of thumbnails.

CDN Integration

On the CDN integration page, you can integrate a Cloudfalre CDN caching service to the website by providing service details:

  • Cloudflare email
  • Global API Key
  • Zone ID

You can also manually purge cache whenever needed or enable the option of ‘automatically purging all cache after each successful AVIF/WebP conversion’. This will help you quickly fix any cache-related issues.
